Although most of Warrnambool's population missed a stellar Grand Final Eve presentation of alt-country at the legendary Liebig St venue "The Loft", there were enough enthusiasts there to make it a party. First up was former Cobden musician Nick Styles, who was promoting his album "Hillbilly Pop". The catchy tunes from this CD were supplemented by a riveting rendition of Hank Williams' "Ramblin' Man". Nick was joined on stage towards the end of his set by 2 accomplices inlcuding Andy Pollock ( guitarist for the headline act -- Matt Joe Gow and the Dead Leaves).
Matt Joe Gow and the Dead Leaves took the stage at 11.30 pm and captivated the crowd with original songs from their album "The Messenger". Their country soaked melodies of tunes like "Come to Mama She Say" and "The Light" had a slightly harder edge than the Nash Chambers produced recorded versions but were instantly recognisable by the few that had heard them previously. An inspirational version of the Willie Dixon (come Muddy Waters) blues classic "Hoochie Coochie Man" drew dancers to the floor and elicited an exclamation of "that was sexy!" from one punter.
All in all a great night experience by too few.
