3WAY FM Live to air March 2015

Published in the Warrnambool Standard March 16th 2015

"Live from the 3WAY Studio"

WHEN Warrnambool’s community radio station opened its doors for a live music performance yesterday listeners tuned in across Australia and overseas. Internet streaming put the 3WAY-FM programs within reach of a global audience as well as dozens of local community fans who came into the Hyland Street studios. Five music groups took turns at the microphones including internationally-recognised Shane Howard. “There was a good buzz through the day and (we) signed up new members,” station president Peter Struth said. “Shane (Howard) was very engaging with the audience. We’ll do another open day in November.” Compilation CDs of the Live and Local performances yesterday and last November will be produced following strong demand for CDs from the March 2014 open-day event. The internet streaming link was established earlier this month as a “temporary” measure when the station’s transmitter broke down and it has proved more effective than expected.

Terang Country Music Festival

Published in the Warrnambool Standard 16th March 2015

FANS from as far as Switzerland kicked up their heels in Terang during the weekend at the town’s fifth annual country music festival.  Organisers said the turnout of more than 1000 people showed increasing popularity and indicated it could become a major part of the national calendar. “This was our biggest and best by far,” committee chairman Ray Worland said. “The quality of music was outstanding. It’s definitely got great potential to go to crowds of 2000 as the word spreads. The Swiss visitors had seen a poster while holidaying and decided to meet the performers in person.” Caravanners are an increasing component of the fan base. Terang’s racecourse resembled a mini camping grounds with more than 100 caravanners there for the festival. Many will stay on for several days before heading to Horsham for another festival. Among the drawcards was eight-year-old Sonny French, who already has his first album under his belt. He had fans enthralled with his solo performance, while his parents, Camille and Stuie French, were also popular stars on the program. “Sonny is quite an entertainer. The crowd loved him,” Mr Worland said. “We are trying to bring variety and also attractions for younger fans. “There was also a cowboy and cowgirl competition with one of the winners only two years old.” The program started Friday night with concerts at the racecourse and Terang Hotel continuing late into Saturday night at the racecourse and finishing yesterday morning with a farewell breakfast. Appreciation awards were presented to musical director Ian Boyd and performers Tim Farren and The Sherrahs who have been part of the program since its formation.

Premier to launch Warrnambool Aus Music Festival countdown

Premier to launch Warrnambool Aus Music Festival countdown

THE year-long countdown to the inaugural Warrnambool Aus Music Festival begins with two events this week. Premier Denis Napthine will officially start the clock ticking towards October 30, 2015, at a launch event tomorrow at noon, while a launch party celebrating Australian music will be held at The Loft tonight from 8pm. Dr Napthine will be joined by Music Victoria chief executive Patrick Donovan at tomorrow’s event at the Lady Bay Resort. Festival director Russ Goodear said that by linking in with the state government and Music Victoria, the aim was to give the Australian music-themed event national significance. Mr Goodear said it will run from October 30 to November 1 next year, starting initially as “a small event (and growing into) a great Aus Music Festival” that will be held in the Lake Pertobe and foreshore area of Warrnambool, with a “fringe festival” held in the CBD and suitable Warrnambool venues. “The goal is to create a regional Victorian cultural event,” he said. “The vision is to create a vibrant ‘must attend’ Aus Music Festival, to attract people of all ages from across Australia who want to share and celebrate great Australian music.” A local committee has been working behind the scenes for the past two years to ensure the event is sustainable, securing funding to draw up detailed business plans and a blueprint for growing the festival in the future. Warrnambool musician Liam Gubbins — a member of young up-and-coming band Bonney Ranch — will be a guest performer at tomorrow’s launch. Tonight’s launch party at The Loft will feature music from local music combo Goodear Schack O’Brien MLC, and new Warrnambool band Doctor Juzzy Jones. Patrons are also encouraged to bring their favourite Aussie CDs to play through the night.

Foley

Foley releases second album

NEW MUSIC: Punk band Foley, which includes former Woolsthorpe men Tom Grey and Dylan Kelson, has launched its new album.
NEW MUSIC: Punk band Foley, which includes former Woolsthorpe men Tom Grey and Dylan Kelson, has launched its new album.

HE might be part of one of Australia’s best young punk bands, but Tom Grey has fond memories of growing up in the south-west. Grey is the bass player for Melbourne band Foley. oining him are Mick Porter (vocals, guitar) and Dylan Kelson (drums). While Porter hails from Maffra in Gippsland, Grey and Kelson are both from Woolsthorpe. The pair went to Woolsthorpe Primary School together before graduating to Hawkesdale P12 College. The first step in their music career was as part of a punk band called New Recipe for Toast which used to play at the old Criterion Hotel in Warrnambool. “We had a good time at school in Woolsthorpe and Hawkesdale. It was great fun,” Grey said. “Playing at the Cri was awesome. We loved it. It was in its decline by the time we were playing there but it was still such a good place. They always supported local bands and the regulars were great.” Further education took Grey to Geelong and Kelson to Melbourne. The move was a big step forward for their music ambitions, extending their reach, playing with different people and at different locations. They eventually teamed up with Porter, the trio making an instant connection. Foley released its first album, Ascot Vale, in 2015. Last Monday, the trio added another addition to their body of work with the release of their second album, Hey, Don’t Worry About It. The album again showcases a style that is built on punk but with the addition of influences the three band members have gathered through the early stages of their careers. Grey is thrilled with the outcome. “We are very happy with how the album has come out,” Grey said. “The music scene in Melbourne is very DYI and we have been able to shape the record how we want so we can do our own story telling.” Foley has a national tour planned to start in July which will take in all capital cities. The Loft in Warrnambool is the only regional centre on the tour agenda at this stage. A full list of tour dates will be released next week.

MELBOURNE punk trio Foley kick off their second major national tour of the year this weekend, and it will bring two-thirds of the band home for a night. Ex-Woolsthorpe lads Tom Grey and Dylan Kelson, along with frontman Mick Porter, will hit The Loft in Warrnambool on Saturday to play songs from Foley’s second album Hey, Don’t Worry About It. It will be the second stop on a massive national tour that takes in seven states and territories over the next month and kicks off at The Tote in Melbourne on Friday. “We’re beginning to get (touring) down to a fine art – we’re well drilled in getting the extra baggage allowance on planes now,” Grey said. Foley have gone to the next level since the release of their debut album Ascot Vale in 2015. They’ve supported The Bennies at the Northcote Social Club, done a national tour with The Hard Aches, snagged international supports, shared the stage with Camp Cope, and been on high rotation on triple j’s Unearthed digital station. Grey said their hard work had been boosted by help from manager and fellow south-west export Max Donohue (who runs band management company Yeah Nahhh), as well as signing on with Adelaide record label Anchorhead and gaining an ever-increasing number of plays on Spotify. “But we’ve all still got day jobs,” Grey laughed. “We’re very realistic about the ability to make a living in Australia playing original music. But we’re still having fun and that’s the main thing. “(Being in a band) sometimes feels like we’re a t-shirt company, or other times we’re a social media company. But most of the time it feels like we’re just mates in a band.” That mateship, particularly between Grey and Kelson, goes back to primary school and extends through to playing at The Criterion Hotel as members of New Recipe For Toast, before heading off to Melbourne and starting Foley four and a half years ago. Foley will be supported by Melbourne band Keggin, Warrnambool lads Runk, and the locally connected The Flying So-High Os at The Loft. Doors open 9pm.
