NEW MUSIC: Punk band Foley, which includes former Woolsthorpe men Tom Grey and Dylan Kelson, has launched its new album.

HE might be part of one of Australia’s best young punk bands, but Tom Grey has fond memories of growing up in the south-west. Grey is the bass player for Melbourne band Foley. oining him are Mick Porter (vocals, guitar) and Dylan Kelson (drums). While Porter hails from Maffra in Gippsland, Grey and Kelson are both from Woolsthorpe. The pair went to Woolsthorpe Primary School together before graduating to Hawkesdale P12 College. The first step in their music career was as part of a punk band called New Recipe for Toast which used to play at the old Criterion Hotel in Warrnambool. “We had a good time at school in Woolsthorpe and Hawkesdale. It was great fun,” Grey said. “Playing at the Cri was awesome. We loved it. It was in its decline by the time we were playing there but it was still such a good place. They always supported local bands and the regulars were great.” Further education took Grey to Geelong and Kelson to Melbourne. The move was a big step forward for their music ambitions, extending their reach, playing with different people and at different locations. They eventually teamed up with Porter, the trio making an instant connection. Foley released its first album, Ascot Vale, in 2015. Last Monday, the trio added another addition to their body of work with the release of their second album, Hey, Don’t Worry About It. The album again showcases a style that is built on punk but with the addition of influences the three band members have gathered through the early stages of their careers. Grey is thrilled with the outcome. “We are very happy with how the album has come out,” Grey said. “The music scene in Melbourne is very DYI and we have been able to shape the record how we want so we can do our own story telling.” Foley has a national tour planned to start in July which will take in all capital cities. The Loft in Warrnambool is the only regional centre on the tour agenda at this stage. A full list of tour dates will be released next week.

MELBOURNE punk trio Foley kick off their second major national tour of the year this weekend, and it will bring two-thirds of the band home for a night. Ex-Woolsthorpe lads Tom Grey and Dylan Kelson, along with frontman Mick Porter, will hit The Loft in Warrnambool on Saturday to play songs from Foley’s second album Hey, Don’t Worry About It. It will be the second stop on a massive national tour that takes in seven states and territories over the next month and kicks off at The Tote in Melbourne on Friday. “We’re beginning to get (touring) down to a fine art – we’re well drilled in getting the extra baggage allowance on planes now,” Grey said. Foley have gone to the next level since the release of their debut album Ascot Vale in 2015. They’ve supported The Bennies at the Northcote Social Club, done a national tour with The Hard Aches, snagged international supports, shared the stage with Camp Cope, and been on high rotation on triple j’s Unearthed digital station. Grey said their hard work had been boosted by help from manager and fellow south-west export Max Donohue (who runs band management company Yeah Nahhh), as well as signing on with Adelaide record label Anchorhead and gaining an ever-increasing number of plays on Spotify. “But we’ve all still got day jobs,” Grey laughed. “We’re very realistic about the ability to make a living in Australia playing original music. But we’re still having fun and that’s the main thing. “(Being in a band) sometimes feels like we’re a t-shirt company, or other times we’re a social media company. But most of the time it feels like we’re just mates in a band.” That mateship, particularly between Grey and Kelson, goes back to primary school and extends through to playing at The Criterion Hotel as members of New Recipe For Toast, before heading off to Melbourne and starting Foley four and a half years ago. Foley will be supported by Melbourne band Keggin, Warrnambool lads Runk, and the locally connected The Flying So-High Os at The Loft. Doors open 9pm.
