A DRINK or two by the wharf was just the ticket for the families and friends who perched on the lawn at Flagstaff Hill last night. Tourists and locals alike welcomed the relaxed atmosphere as they kicked back at the maritime village for the first fully licensed Wednesday by the Wharf event. Local rockabilly outfit The Sky Rockats provided the music while summer campers made the short walk up for a twilight tipple. Cath Johnson, from Geelong, who has been camping on the Warrnambool foreshore for the past 10 summers, said opening the bar was a great way to at. tract more people to the historic village. "We've been to the (Shipwrecked) laser show but we haven't actually been here during daylight hours," said Mrs J ohnson, who brought her husband and two young daughters. "We'll be back," she said with friend, David Benci. "It's great because you can walk up (from the camping ground) and walk back. The kids are happy because there's plenty of room to run around," she said. Mrs Johnson expected local people would flock to the weekly summer event once they found out about it. Flagstaff Hilt executive director, and the historic bar's official licensee, Peter Abbott, suited up in period costume to serve drinks during the first event after the village secured a permanent liquor licence. "In the past, we've had to turn functions away as we have always had to apply for temporary licences. . . and it takes 28 days to apply for one," he said. "We're not planning on turning it into a rave party venue. It's about using the natural ambience of Flagstaff Hill for a wide range of venues." Mr Abbott hoped to host more local bands during the weekly events, which could be moved to Friday nights in February.
