McCool off on a different track -- (Warrnambool Standard 24/09/1998 - Arts and entertainment compiled by Lara O'Toole and Anthony Bunn) - Copyright Warrnambool Standard 1998.
Young Warrnambool band Finn McCool is heading in a totally different direction to many of its peers. Instead of leaning on the heavier side of things or heading into the popular alternative groove, the foursome in this burgeoning band are concentrating on folk and relaxed pop. All aged 18, Deakin University commerce and visual art students and best mates, Finn McCool consists of Peter McKenzie (bass, backing vocals), Sam Baillie (guitar, vocals), Brent Greening (bodhran) and Chris Forsyth (drums). Fitting rehearsals around their studies, McKenzie said the group had been established for five months and had about nine originals under its belt, of which Baillie writes the most. He said while not concentrating on the original side of life, Finn McCool preferred to focus on tunes from such greats as Violent Femmes and Custard. A good dose of Irish was also included in the mix with McKenzie learning the tin whistle to add to the band's abilities.
