Opening the door to the next generation

JEREMEY Cairns has high hopes for the future of the Warrnambool music scene.

The co-owner of Versatile Productions is just one of the people behind the new fortnightly gigs at the Gallery nightclub, designed to showcase local talent. For him, the gigs are a chance to provide some valuable learning experience to newcomers to the live music scene. “Basically the idea is to give them a learning curve — without exposure, without that chance, these kids are never going to get any better,” Cairns said. He hopes the regular gigs will help inspire a renaissance in the Warrnambool music scene, which he believes has stalled in recent years. “We are here to try and rebuild the music industry (in the south-west) to what it used to be.” A big part of that is getting seasoned performers and producers to pass on their knowledge to up-and-coming artists. “A lot of the earlier generations have not passed anything back, this is what I want to see happening.” Each Gallery gig will feature a new band with minimal on-stage experience. Those musicians will get a chance to work with a full-size PA system and learn how to get the best possible sound they can. People keen to learn the behind-the-scenes aspect of live performances are being encouraged to help with things like setting up, mixing and lighting. For audiences, the events will provide a great vibe as well as a huge diversity of musical styles among the four bands in each line-up.Cairns says he wouldn’t be surprised to see anything on stage from heavy rock to spoken word performances. “Any artist can come in and expose what they are doing.”
