Warrnambool band Liquid Nales played to a capacity crows at the Push Studio RB-X Battle of the Bands grand final in Melbourne on Saturday. The technical metal band gained the opportunity to play at the event after winning the Warrnambool heat of the Battle of the Bands in October. Liquid Nales, which comprises guitarist and vocalist Paul Van Zelst, bass player Michael Repacholi, and drummer Miles O'Flaherty, formed several years ago and have recently secured several gigs at Warrnambool venues. During the grand final, Liquid Nales performed six original songs which were well received by judges and the crowd. Band members appeared pleased with their performance when they left the stage, while the crowd cheered for an encore. "It just felt like any other gig. We did put a bit more effort in, I think, than what we usually would". "We knew that because the competition was tougher, we would have to try a lot harder. We didn't go there to win - we went there to play well", band members said. On Sunday, the band members spent six hours in Richmond's Studio RB-X where they recorded four tracks in Richmond's Studio RB-X, where they recorded four tracks - Happy Spring Valley, Schmooglebreath, Puntiarnak and Birdbath. The band hopes to include the tracks on an upcoming demo. Moonee Valley band Gravel won the grand final, with Kingston band Fiendish taking second place and Frankston's Thirstee coming third. The competition run as part of the Push Over '96, an event organised by the The Push and the Australian Drug Foundation featuring more than 20 bands including silverchair and Spiderbait. Push Over '96 also featured skateboarding competition, an international food market, stalls, dancing displays and free rides. This year the event was held at Central Pier in Victorian Docks with Shed 14 cleared to house the main stage and other stages and stalls set up around the building. The event attracted more than 6000 people intent on seeing their favourite bands and to support the winner of their local competition. Late in the evening all other attractions were abandoned when the crowds merged near the centre stage for the arrival of crowd favourites Spiderbait. After a brief interval and stage rearrangements teenage idols silverchair took to the stage to conclude the event with an energetic set of original songs.

WARRNAMBOOL band Liquid Nales will perform at The Lady Bay Hotel and the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre tomorrow night to mark the band’s official come back after eight months without performing live. Earlier this year they recorded two tracks for the compilation CD The Art of Frotage. Since then, new members Matt Edwards (vocals) and Gordon Morrison (bass) have joined original members Paul Van Zelst (guitar) and Myles O’Flaherty (drums). Van Elst describes the band’s sound as “pretty heavy” but will surprise fans with some mellow tracks.
If my memory serves me correctly, I think Thirstee came second in the Pushover battle of the bands? I was the drummer. Miles Allen :)
