THERE is one musician among the recent crop of South West Tafe music industry skills graduates who is definitely not content with playing in his own lounge room. Warrnambool’s Nick Costa has big plans for the future, both as a solo performer and as the founding member of a new original band. The band is still in the pipeline, but Costa says he is concentrating for now on songwriting and solo performances, including a gig this weekend at the Noorat Football Club. He has been playing solo gigs around the south-west over the last few months, slowly building a reputation and testing out his original compositions on stage. Costa says his time in various cover bands, most recently Jamie Beasley and the Rock Hard Members, has given him a strong repertoire of cover tunes, but the real challenge lies in playing originals. “You’ve got a safeguard playing covers — if you play Brown-Eyed Girl you know everyone’s going to love it.” But Costa is keen to push the boundaries and get some of his original material out there in front of a live audience. “You can be really expressive with your own songwriting,” he says. The former Terang resident is keen to apply his skills behind the scenes as well, having been the driving force behind five BigNight Out gigs over the last two years in Terang. Costa says his musical style mixes acoustic and electric guitar and takes in influences such as You Am I, Matchbox 20 and Smashing Pumpkins. “I just really enjoy playing solo, you get a lot out of it, I have a lot of fun on stage.” Nick Costa will perform on Saturday from 9pm at the Noorat Football Club.
