WARRNAMBOOL'S metal boom continues with another new heavy act starting to make serious waves. Five-piece Deliverance We Prey have been together for about a year and are attracting a strong following. Guitarist Dave Bickerton said the band had almost run out of their give-away demo discs, which contain three tracks recorded at Noise Studios. “We were going to sell them but we've just given them away because ultimately our aim is to get our name out there,” Bickerton said. “At the last couple of shows we've had people saying ‘where's your demo?' and ‘what's your Myspace?' and it feels good to have people coming up and saying they want to listen to your band.” Deliverance We Prey, along with hardcore band Mind My Hostage, are leading the way in the local heavy scene, honing their live sound with every available support at The Loft or the Underdog gigs at the Wannon Park. The hard work has started to open doors. Metal booking agency Kiss Or Kill has hooked up with Deliverance We Prey and the group played their fi rst Melbourne shows last week. “It went very well,” Bickerton said. “The venue was awesome. “It's really surprising how quick it's happening.” The band — Bickerton, Nick Fox (vocals), Mat Wale (guitar), Dom Finn (bass) and Lee Mugavin (drums) — will return to Melbourne next month to join a six band line-up before headlining their own show in Bendigo in July. Bickerton is reluctant to pin-point the band's sound and said Forte magazine had trouble in naming a genre, mentioning hardcore, nu-metal, death metal and thrash metal in the space of reviewing the band's three track demo. “The moment you start (pigeon-holing) your band is the moment you start losing direction,” Bickerton explained. “We just write music and guitar riffs like we'd want to hear them. Everyone in the band has got their individual tastes. My favourite band is Opeth, Mat likes Trivium, Dom's into Strapping Young Lad and Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lee likes Unearth and Lamb Of God. And Foxy's into a bit of hardcore, but he loves everything. He was listening to Jewel the other day and wants to cover one of her songs.” Deliverance We Prey will join Melbourne's Internal Nightmare, Sydney group Celebrity Morgue and fellow locals Mind My Hostage for a night of heavy metal at The Loft tomorrow.
