COBWEBS will be dusted off and the funk will be revived when former south-west trio Makeshift Groove emerge from hibernation on Friday night. The funk-rockers have played just one gig in the past 11 years – at Torquay’s Nightjar Festival in January this year – but Friday’s gig at The Loft in Warrnambool is likely to be the first of many in the next 12 months. The band comprises Nigel Wearne (guitar/vocals), Jason McMahon (bass), and John Moorfield (drums), and Wearne said reconnecting with his old bandmates had been enjoyable. “We’re going to start playing a bit again now that I’ve moved back to Warrnambool,” Wearne said, adding that the initial break-up had come about when he moved to Geelong a decade ago. “It’s going to be fun doing something different – I’ve been playing folk for so long I’m looking forward to making some noise. “Makeshift Groove is really funny and fun. It’s been cool catching up with these guys again. I couldn’t remember any of the songs, but once we started playing they just came back to me.” Wearne’s solo career has been flourishing since Makeshift Groove called it a day, but he said he was keen to balance the two. He recently released his crowd-funded album Drawing Circles, which led to a lengthy east coast tour.
