South-west country band Louie And The Rustlers have a long journey ahead of them next week — a 15-hour drive to Tamworth. The six-piece group will be performing at the world-famous country music festival there, scoring four gigs at the event. Singer Louise Clancey said the band began as a trio 14 months ago, forming specifically to perform at last year’s festival in Tamworth. “We were going up there to busk (but) we got a couple of gigs there,” she said. About eight months ago, the band expanded to a six-piece and has been performing regularly around the south-west at venues including the Caledonian Inn, Port Fairy, and the Boggy Creek Pub, Curdievale. The line-up comprises Clancey, rhythm guitarist Russ Goodear, lead guitarist Jon Clegg, bassist Michael Schack, drummer Tim Clingan and harmonica player Ricky Holmes. Clancey explained the band mixed bluegrass, old-style country, blues and rock to create a unique sound. They play a handful of originals and diverse covers from artists such as Jewel, Bob Dylan, The Doors, Queen, Creedence Clearwater Revival and even AC/DC. As the main songwriter, she said the band’s original songs were moving more and more towards a bluegrass sound — a style of music which has apparently been enjoying a resurgence of popularity lately. “Everywhere we go, when Jon gets the banjo out people just love it, especially a lot of young people,” Clancey said. After Tamworth, Louie And The Rustlers plan to have a CD launch for their debut EP Be Kind at the Caledonian Inn in February. The group will also be part of this year’s line-up for the Port Fairy Folk Festival.
