WA R R N A M B O O L band Mixbowl are taking their sound to the people, with the releasethis week of their self-titled debut EP. The CD will be launched next Thursday at the Gallery as part of a powerhouse live original gig, including support from Agenda 140, Dogfish and Kingswood 69. Mixbowl have been playing around the traps in the south-west since forming two years ago — they are a product of the Tafe Music Industry Skills course. Bassist John Miller describes the band’s sound as “heavy alternative”, taking on board influences such as Korn, silverchair and the Deftones. He says the band is striving for something a little bit different. “There’s not many bands like us around.” It’s an effort that has already built up a strong following for the band around the region. After a host of successful pub and all-ages gigs, the trio set up a Website, which attracted 200 hits in its first five days. John, along with drummer Daegal Almond and singer-guitarist Stephen Miller, spent three days at Warrnambool’s Motherlode studios recording the new CD. Fans may soon have a chance to check out the recording effort first-hand, with footage of the band in the studio set to go on to the Website. Stephen, the band’s main songwriter, says the recording sessions were a great experience. “Being in the studio is the best thing about being in a band, it’s just so much fun.” He is now hard at work on new material while the band is promoting its debut release, with the ultimate aim of securing a contract. Find out what Mixbowl is all about at the Gallery next Thursday night, where the band is promising a dynamic live show, or pick up a copy of the CD at Capricorn Records.
