DAMIAN McDonald, winner of the Couch Surf'n cover art competition which aims to publicise homeless youth, intends to spend his prize money on a few buckets of paint for a new house.  The competition required singers and songwriters to pen an original track about  homelessness and to appear on a special CD. Artists were asked to design cover art for the CD.  Twelve entries were received for the cover on the theme of homelessness.   The winner of the art competition, Mr McDonald, and winner of the  song writing competition, district band 21st Century Ox, received $400 each. Dion Barker, a member of 21st Century Ox, said one colleague intended to spend his share of the money on a new amplifier.  Mr McDonald said he believed in the idea of creating a cover for a CD which promoted awareness of homelessness. "I believed. I felt half-obligated and  half-inspired," he said.  Mr McDonald said he felt he could relate on a personal level to the homeless situation  because of the lack of security he had in his job. Like Mr McDonald, Mr Barker and his band felt inspired by the fact that the competition promoted community awareness of the homeless situation. "I think it's great that we're able to be involved in a project that obviously has an  important message to convey," Mr Barker said. The band 21st Century Ox, inspired by the homelessness awareness project, will play  at an event in the youth centre, an open stage night for youth bands.
