With a unique blend of instruments and sounds, Warrnambool duo Deja Blu is set to put on a Christmas party with a difference tomorrow night. To celebrate the festive season, Deja Blu will be inviting Santa to take the stage towards the end of its fun-filled set at the Mahogany Ship Restaurant bar from 8pm. Deja Blu features Brendan Dowd on vocals, harmonica, stomp box, snare drum, didgeridoo, washboard and a host of other instruments and Mic Murphy on guitar, vocals tambourine and stomp box. Dowd said the name of the band, which was formed only three months ago, came about because of the link each musician had with previous bands. "People probably already know us from other bands, we've been in so many other outfits, so it's like deja vu, so that's where our name came from," he said. With a repertoire that stretches from percussion, to blues, to Celtic and ballads, Deja Blu had already recorded a six-track EP of covers at Warrnambool's Motherlode Studio, Dowd said. "The CD came about after we played our first gig and we were keen to get something down — it ended up taking three hours," he said. The duo had a number of projects in the pipeline, including tours, festival appearances and a New Year's Eve gig in Koroit. He said there were also plans to release a full-length CD soon. "If we got six covers down in three hours we should be able to nail six originals and meld it together to bring out a 12- track album," he said.
