Members of Dalriada, above, and Ploughboys will bring their contemporary Celtic tunes back to Warrnambool for a one-off show on Saturday.
CONTEMPORARY Celtic bands Dalriada and Ploughboys are set play Warrnambool for one show only after concentrating on the festival scene for the past few years. Both bands have strong links with the south-west with Dalriada beginning in Warrnambool and the Ploughboys' Damian Howard also growing up in Warrnambool. Now based in Melbourne, Ploughboys has recently been playing in Melbourne and at festivals around Australia. Dalriada drummer Dominic McAlinden and bass player John Edgar also play in the Ploughboys, so are set for a busy Saturday night. Dalriada guitarist and band leader Warrnambool's Don Stewart said Dalriada had been focusing on playing at festivals around Australia and had recently returned from the South Australia Folk Festival and National Folk Week in Canberra. “We've been doing stints at festivals and haven't played in Warrnambool for a couple of years so we're really looking forward to it,” he said. With band members in Geelong and Melbourne, Stewart said rehearsals were difficult and required a lot of travelling, so the decision to only play at festivals had relieved the pressure of rehearsing for pub gigs. “We've had our moments, but everyone really enjoys the music and playing together, so we're not putting ourselves under pressure with too many rehearsals,” he said. Stewart said both Dalriada and the Ploughboys would be playing contemporary Celtic music. “The main difference between (the bands) is that we're heavily influenced by bagpipes, where the Ploughboys use a fiddle,” he said. The bands will appear at the Mahogany Ship Restaurant on Saturday. Tickets are available from Capricorn Records.
