AMONG the choir of 370 voices which make up the Melbourne Millenium Chorus on Sunday, 28 will be from Warrnambool. Regional choir leader Lyn Eales said the singers were buzzing with excitement at the opportunity to sing alongside performers such as blues musician Chris Wilson in Hamer Hall at the Victorian Arts Centre. The eighth concert for the Melbourne Millenium Chorus is called AZADI — Iranian for freedom. The choir will be supported by world music performing groups, poets and storytellers. They will be led with the likes of indigenous singer, songwriter and film director Richard Frankland, award winning singer Kavisha Mazzella and Kurdish performer Dursan Acar. There will be performances by traditional Indonesian group Rentak Nusantari from Aceh, songs of Southern Sudan with Ajak Kwai and readings from Bagryana Popov and acclaimed author Arnold Zable. Eales said the Warrnambool singers had been rehearsing every Thursday to perfect some complicated arrangements. “They are brilliant — they have nailed it,” Eales said. “Not only have they learnt ten new songs, we’ve learnt five new languages.” Eales said they had been able to call upon Italian, Spanish and Sudanese members of the community to help them out with the pronunciation of some of the lyrics. AZADI — Songs of Liberation will be at Hamer Hall at the Victorian Arts Centre in St Kilda Road, Melbourne on Sunday at 2.30pm. Bookings: 9417 1983.
