Warrnambool's latest band, Blu Jammah, is a hotchpotch of the city's existing groups. It consists of David Lodge (accordion keyboard), Brendan Dowd (extensive percussion, washboard, harmonica), David Bell (drums), Mic Murphy (vocals, guitar, bass) and Danny Grigg (bass, guitar). Dowd said the group came together as an alternative to what the members were doing in other bands such as King Bees, Its your thing, and backing solo artist Marco Goldsmith. Focusing on zydeco, roots, swamp, electric blues, and slide music, Blu Jammah will offer its style at debut gigs at the Port Campbell Blow the Winter Blues Away Festival on Saturday, and the Hotel Warnambool on Sunday afternoon.
Dowd said that although the band had been together for a month, plans were already under way for original music to become a large component in its music. Meanwhile, he said it was sticking to performing covers of personal favorites such as Ben Harper, Cruel Sea, Clifton Cheiner and Buckwheat Zydeco. "We saw the opportunity to do lots more zydeco", Dowd said.
The band hoped to start gigging around the Warrnambool area soon.
